How to Improve Hotel Reviews with Sound Masking

Customers Don’t Like Noise

My family and I travel a lot.  It used to be from one state to another just to visit family at the holidays.  Stressful as travelling with children can be, at least we arrived at “homebase”- meaning, at a house we were familiar with and people we love and who love us.  Now, we live in Scotland, so our travels are a little more far-reaching and definitely more stressful.  Part of that is due to the fact that we land in hotels and usually share a room.  That in and of itself can be a nightmare.

Fortunately, my husband might as well have a PhD in online research because he is the king of finding good deals and scoping out good places for us.  One of the things he consistently looks at is online customer reviews.  This made me realize we are not the only ones to do this- reviews are one of the only ways potential customers can see how a hotel will actually be.  Any hotel can take good photos and give a beautiful description which may or may not be descriptive of what the experience would actually be.  We’ve all seen great pictures only to find out you’re right next to the elevator or road construction or at the wrong place at the wrong time {bachelor party anyone?}.

Try Sound Masking

Hence, it’s essential that hotel managers pay attention to what their customers are saying.  Their ratings can make or break them.  Interestingly, one of the most common complaints that hotel managers get is about too much noise.  Most can admit, that many times the situations causing the noise are out of your control {construction going on across the street, noisy crowd in the hotel restaurant that night}, but there is a way you can help your customers to control the amount of noise they hear inside their rooms without installing sound proofing.

A simple solution would be to have a sound machine {also known as a  white noise machine} in each room. If things get a little too noisy in the hallway, the person in the room could simply turn on the sound machine and drown out a good portion of the outside noise. It’s obviously totally optional and shows that you care about personal comfort and a good night of sleep.  Sound machines work by using white noise at a low level so that the brain can’t quite distinguish individual sounds- this is a good thing because it then tunes it all out, and in this case, fall asleep instead of fixating on an annoying noise or sets of noises.

Customer ratings are increasingly important.  Thus, it’s important for hotel managers to resolve noise issues so they can keep a good record online.
